FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
EMS stands for whole-body electrical muscle stimulation. How it works is, electric impulses are generated by our EMS devices and delivered through electrodes and conductive padding to every major muscle group on the body, activating 80% of them. These impulses stimulate the muscles and cause deep contractions, similar to contractions during intense exercise. Some benefits of EMS training include increased muscle hypertrophy, increased fat loss, and pain relief.
The equipment consists of four main parts: the EMS device, batteries, training suits, and special undergarments. The EMS device connects wirelessly to training suits, which have built-in electrodes strategically placed on major muscle groups. Underneath the training suits, you wear special undergarments with padding to safely conduct the electric pulses to your muscles.
In short: EMS sessions last only 20 minutes because the muscles fatigue more quickly than during conventional weightlifting.
To elaborate on this, understanding the function of slow and fast-twitch muscle fibers is essential. Slow-twitch muscle fibers are our endurance muscles, commonly engaged in daily activities and weight training. In contrast, fast-twitch fibers are explosive muscles that produce strong contractions but have limited endurance. Typically, recruiting fast-twitch muscle fibers demands high-intensity exercises, making their activation more challenging in conventional training. However, when using EMS, both slow and fast-twitch muscle fibers activate simultaneously with each pulse.
Furthermore, with our EMS devices, approximately 80% of muscle fibers engage with every pulse. In comparison, traditional weight training activates about 40-80% of muscle fibers, requiring significantly more effort to reach the 80% activation threshold.
Initial Consultation & Trial (60 minutes)
During your initial consultation and trial, we will provide a high-level overview of what EMS training is, as well as get to know you, your goals, and needs. We will then coach you through an introductory 20-minute EMS session, during which we will also set up the parameters to suit your unique needs. The initial trial also includes a free undergarment rental, which is the specialized suit that is worn underneath the vested equipment that helps conduct the electric pulses to your muscles.
Subsequent Sessions (30 minutes)
During subsequent sessions, you can expect to move much quicker by coming in 5-10 minutes prior to your session, and dressing in your undergarments ahead of time. We always recommend doing a brisk walk on the treadmill prior to your session as a warm-up. Your trainer will then assist you in putting on the training suit, and then you'll begin your 20-minute EMS session.
Note: undergarments are required during each session, otherwise the equipment will not be functional. You may choose to purchase your own or rent one from us.
It's important that clients ensure they are well-hydrated, and have eaten 2-4 hours prior to training. It is also recommended to not engage in any intense exercise 48 before your sessions.
EMS training should be done 1 to 2 times per week, maximum. Due to the high-intensity nature of EMS sessions, clients should allow for at least 48 hours (2 days) for recovery. Depending on how your body reacts, you may need longer than 48 hours to recover after your first few sessions.
Recovery is just as important as exercising itself because poor recovery can lead to overtraining. Overtraining can have several negative side effects, such as muscle atrophy, an increased risk of injury, muscle stiffness, and pain.
On lower intensities, the electric pulses feel like a gentle vibration, perhaps even a tickle. On higher intensities, you can feel deep contractions in your muscles with each pulse. While the sensation may feel strange at first, it is not painful.
Washing Instructions:
Turn garments inside out.
Hand wash or delicate wash using cold water. If you decide to put your undergarments through a delicate wash cycle, use a mesh laundry bag. A good detergent to use is Woolite Darks Liquid Laundry Detergent or Captodor Sports Laundry Detergent.
Do not tumble dry. Only hang or lay flat to air dry.
Additional Note: If your undergarments become moist from sweating, ensure you allow them to air dry as soon as possible to avoid mildew from developing.
